Nutrition & ARFID
When Food Isn’t Enough

For kids with ARFID, getting the right nutrition can feel like an uphill battle. Limited diets often mean missing out on key vitamins, minerals, and proteins needed for growth and energy. Supplements can help fill the gaps, but even those can be a challenge — unfamiliar tastes, textures, or smells can lead to instant rejection. Finding the right options takes patience, creativity, and trial and error, but there are ways to make it work.

Getting the Essentials

The list we provide isn’t exhaustive, but it’s based on what real parents have found helpful in forums and support groups, worldwide, after a lot of trial and error.

We’re not doctors, so always check with a healthcare professional before introducing any supplements to ensure they’re safe and appropriate for your child’s needs.

We’ll continue to update this as new options emerge. If you’re using something that’s not on the list which you think would be helpful to share, drop us a message.

Vitamins & Minerals

Kids with ARFID often struggle to get enough vitamins and minerals because their limited diet can make it hard to meet nutritional needs. Many traditional supplements are off the table due to strong taste, smell, or texture sensitivities. That’s why colourless, flavourless options — like dissolvable powders, clear liquids, or hidden boosters — in familiar safe foods can be a game-changer.

It’s not about tricking them; it’s about finding creative, stress-free ways to give their bodies what they need without triggering food anxiety.

Products

We’re working on updating links for different countries — some of these products ship globally, while others may need to be sourced locally. If a direct link isn’t available in your region, you can often find the same or a similar product with a bit of research. Our goal is to list as many tried-and-tested options as possible, making it easier for parents to find what works for their child. We are not doctors, always consult your professionals before administering medication of any kind.

  • 〰️ This mixes well with his water

“I break it into 2 servings, just in case he tastes anything. I don't taste anything. I taste everything before trying because I don't want him to reject the only thing he drinks.

It will mix in anything since it mixed so well in water.

I pre mix it in a small water bottle.... let it settle for a few hours and then split half the mixture half with half plain water so to dilute it even more just in case... and make it 2-3 seconds not just one.” - From an ARFID Parent

Helpful Tips

Here’s some tips from parents worldwide who have spent countless hours trying different methods to help their children with ARFID. These are real, tried-and-tested strategies from those who truly understand the daily challenges. We’ll keep adding to this list as new ideas emerge, so if you’ve found something that works, let us know — we’d love to share it and help more families on this journey.

  • Our child eats toast and we used to blend nuts & seeds together, and sprinkle that on the melting butter. Helped with protein and vitamin intake.

  • I always use a metal water bottle so they can’t see any colour differences.

  • We use gummy vitamins - adding them in a package of actual gummy bears. For example, leave 2 regular gummy bears then add in their vitamin gummy. Note: Be careful not to ‘trick’ your ARFID kids as this can impact trust and cause all out food rejection.
